Georgina Douglas, for the last two years the single sculling
representative in Australia, should win this final fairly handily, but may be challenged
in the first 1000m by Rebecca Joyce, who shows early speed. With 500m to go, Douglas
should be in command. Joyce, Hatzakis and Roye, in that order, could be running very close
to each other with 500m to go, i.e. within a length, all fighting for second place.
The following Prediction Report for the Finals was prepared simply by mixing the split
times of these crews from their races in the semi-finals on Tuesday. The wind may be a
significant factor in skewing the comparative values of these times between the two
semi-finals heats, as the three fastest scullers came from semi-final 1 and the three
slowest scullers came from semi- final 2. Local meteorological data indicates that the
wind was averaging between 19 and 17 km/h when these races were run, was shifting in
direction by 30 degrees during this period, with gusts between 28 and 22 km/h. This could
easily skew results significantly, even though these races were scheduled to run 7 minutes
apart.
