This race is very difficult to analyze. Free had the fastest semi-final
time, but based on the times in the heats, he would have been 5th at 1000m and 6th at the
finish. Reside, Burton, Day and Antonie were all fast over the first 1000m in their heats,
but Antonie's 1000m time in the semi-finals is well off the others'. Much of these
variations are probably due to bad wind conditions, gusts, direction changes, etc. in the
semi- finals. Burton being Australia's 1999 single sculler at Worlds, and the bronze won
by Free, Reside and Day in the 1999 4x at Worlds, stand well in their recent favor, as
does Inglis' 5th in the 4x in 1998. No prediction here.
The following Prediction Report for the Finals was prepared simply by mixing the split
times of these crews from their races in the semi-finals on Tuesday. The wind may be a
significant factor in skewing the comparative values of these times between the two
semi-finals heats, as the three fastest scullers came from semi-final 2 and the three
slowest scullers came from semi- final 1. Local meteorological data indicates that the
wind was averaging 20 km/h and gusting up to 26 km/h when these two semi- finals were run.
These races were scheduled to start 7 minutes apart.
