Cooper River Park
Camden County, New Jersey, USA

Pre-Race Analysis of Varsity Eight Final

You might as well start this race from the first 500 meter mark with all crews expected to be overlapped there anyway. Don't put too much money on any crew until they sort out a bit at 1000 meters. By the 1000, expect the "twin engines" known as Brown and Washington to have established themselves as the leaders, with no material margins between them, and maybe even switching leads from stroke to stroke with one at the catch and the other on the recovery. They will be that close for almost 1500 meters, so they better prepare for the pressure. Pressure with 500 to go will also come from Virginia (overlapped with them) and California and Princeton (just a length off), so Brown and Washington have to battle the nerves with each other, yet not blow themselves out creating last 500 meter vulnerability to Virginia and California, in particular.

Prediction: Brown over Washington, but probably too close to call. Followed by Virginia, Cal, Michigan, and Princeton, in that order.

All the times shown in the pro forma race bulletins here are based on these crews' respective times in Saturday's semi-finals which were both hotly contested.
