This race is expected to be very close between 5 crews ( excluding Williams ) to the 1000 meter mark. At that point, with Michigan State comfortably in the lead, Oregon State and Northeastern must each concentrate on staying with Boston University and Southern California, who are both expected to make big moves in the third 500 meters to solidify the second and third qualifying spots for Saturday's semi-finals. If Oregon State and Northeastern cannot stay closer in the third 500 meter interval, then they probably will not be a threat to Boston University and USC in the last 500 meters.

Prediction: Michigan State, USC/Boston University 2nd/3rd (too close to call), Oregon State, Northeastern and Williams in that order.
