The following Prediction Report for the Finals was prepared simply by
mixing the split times of these crews from their races in the heats on Monday.
This final looks like a very close finish for first and second between Edwards and
Richards (WEN) and Balmforth and Burgess (GEE), who are the four members of Australia's
silver medal lightweight coxless four at the 1999 World Championships. WEN may be down on
GEE after the first 500m mark, but appears to be very strong in the second 500m and should
gain a half boat lead on GEE by the 1000m and hold it until 500m to go. Both WEN and GEE
had comfortable leads in their respective heats with 500m to go, and each seems to have
backed off a bit in the last 500m. Expect GEE to try to hold off WEN's big move in the
second 500m interval, which is where GEE is predicted to be challenged by WEN for the
lead. The other four crews seemed to have put out all the way to the finish in their
heats, and with WEN and GEE picking it up in the last 500m interval, none of those four
crews is projected to challenge for either first or second finishing places.
