Note: We do not have the FISA lane assignments yet for this race, but do know the pairs of crews who will be placed in lanes 3/4, 2/5 and 1/6, respectively, and have assigned lanes accordingly. Even if lane assignments change within those pairings, it will not affect the prediction.
Pre-race Analysis: (Updated: Saturday, August 28) The times used to create the following race bulletin for this event are the split times for these crews from their respective semi-finals heats on Friday. ITA won its semi-final easily leading all the way over the USA in second place. GER won its semi-final, but was pushed all the way, first by GRE and in the end by FRA. SUI also won its semi-final, but in an extremely close finish with 2nd place AUS. For this reason, we have looked back at each of the "A" finalists' times in their preliminary heats, and their racing record so far internationally in 1999, to see where ITA may stack up against GER, FRA, SUI and AUS, given ITA's easy semi and the other's hard semis. Based on this further review, it appears that ITA ('98 silver and '99 winners in Lucerne) may lead a tight pack of these crews after 500 meters and that ITA, GER, SUI and AUS should be sharing the same water overlapped with 500 meters to go. It should be close at the finish line, but our revised prediction is ITA gold, GER silver, SUI bronze, AUS a very close 4th and maybe bronze, with FRA in 5th and USA 6th.
