Women's Single Scull - Final
Saturday, August 28, 1999

Note: We do not have FISA lane assignments yet for this final, but have placed crews by pairs according to which were the winners, which were 2nd and which were 3rd into lanes 3/4, 2/5 or 1/6. We will not change these assignments even when the FISA lanes are published, because it does not affect our predictions at all.

Pre-race Analysis: The 3 medalists in the Women's Single Sculls should be GER, BUL and BLR in that order for the gold, silver and bronze. Although GER is likely to give up a lot of ground in the first 500 meters to the early leaders, BLR and BUL, she rows much more even and faster 500 meter segments than the others from then on. GER should close significantly on the leaders in the second 500 and take the lead by the 1500 meter mark to capture the gold medal moving away. BUL has to figure out a way to stop GER's move on her in the 3rd 500 meters, maybe with a very hard push at 1000 meters before GER catches her. If BUL can do this she could have a chance at the gold medal.  If BUL pushes too hard there, though, she risks opening the door to BLR to take the silver medal away from her. Interestingly, GER had the slowest of the winning times in last Sunday's preliminary heats, but her last 3 splits in that race confirm she was not pushing at all.
